My Resume and Research Statement.

Curriculum Vitae

Rob Basten (1981) is an associate professor in the group Operations, Planning, Accounting & Control at the Eindhoven University of Technology (TUe). He has been there since October 2014, first as an assistant professor.

His research focusses on the use of new technologies in after sales operations for high-tech equipment: maintenance optimisation, spare parts inventory control, and design of after sales service supply chains. He is especially interested in incorporating new technologies in the design and control of after sales services: For example, how should supply chains be designed when (some) spare parts can be 3D printed or how should human users interact with decision support systems that are based heavily on techniques from artificial intelligence? His research is both analytical and empirical, with the latter work being mostly in the area of behavioral operations management.

He received his Master's degrees in Industrial Engineering and Management in December 2004 and in Computer Science in August 2005, both from the University of Twente (UT). On January 8, 2010, Rob defended his PhD thesis and received his PhD degree in Operations Management from the same university (promotor: prof. dr. Henk (W.H.M.) Zijm). As a PhD student, he also visited the Operations Research and Industrial Engineering (ORIE) graduate program in the Cockrell School of Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin. For more information on his PhD work, go here.

After graduating, Rob became a postdoc at the Eindhoven University of Technology. In November 2010, he also became a part-time consultant at Gordian Logistic Experts, before going back full-time to his alma mater in September 2011 to work as assistant professor in the chair of Maintenance Engineering in the faculty of Engineering Technology of the University of Twente, where he stayed until September 2014. From October 2014 through February 2015, Rob visited the department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and from June through August 2022, he visited the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College.

Rob has supervised graduation projects of many Bachelor and Master students (lists can be found below). He is currently supervising the following PhD students:

The following PhD students obtained their PhD degrees: He further supervised two PDEng candidates: He is project leader and work package leader in the ProSeLoNext project (see the announcement) and work package leader in the PrimaVera project. He was work package leader in the SINTAS project and project leader of the OCPROM project. All these projects have been funded by NWO with cofunding from industry. He was further the initiator and organizer of the Maintenance Research Day.

Rob has published journal papers in, and he has acted as a reviewer for, journals such as Operations Research, Management Science, Manufacturing & Service Operations Management, Production and Operations Management, Journal of Operations Management, IISE Transactions, Reliability Engineering & System Safety, Naval Research Logistics, and the European Journal of Operational Research. For a full list of publications, see below.
